Other U.S. ambassadors killed in terror attacks in the past half-century:

Feb. 14, 1979: Adolph Dubs, Afghanistan. He was kidnapped by militants and held at the Kabul Hotel. He was found dead after an exchange of gunfire between Afghan police and the kidnappers.

June 16, 1976: Francis E. Meloy, Jr., Lebanon. Meloy, his adviser and their driver were kidnapped and killed by the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.

Aug. 19, 1974: Rodger Davies, Cyprus. He was shot during a protest against the embassy after the Turkish invasion of Cyprus.

March 1, 1973: Cleo A. Noel, Jr., Sudan. Killed in an attack by the militant group Black September.

Aug. 28, 1968: John Gordon Mein, Guatemala. Ordered out of his car and gunned down by guerrillas.
