A prominent physician was found slain in his Orono home moments after police fatally shot an armed man who was in the doctor's front yard Friday night.

Found dead in his home was Dr. Stephen Larson, 74, who has been an obstetrics and gynecology physician for more than 33 years, practicing in Burnsville and Edina. He specializes in pelvic reconstructive surgery and is affiliated with Fairview hospitals.

Authorities have not yet released the identities and relationship of the two dead, but a relative confirmed the family was mourning the death of Larson and declined to speak further, saying she needed to be with family and friends Saturday.

No officers were hurt in the confrontation, according to the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office, which continued to investigate Saturday.

Orono police were called to the home in the 1000 block of Heritage Lane, near Tanager Lake, about 8:55 p.m. When officers arrived, they found a man out front with a handgun.

"Subsequently, shots were were fired," a statement from the Sheriff's Office said. "The adult male with the handgun was pronounced dead at the scene."

When officers went inside the home, they found Larson. He had been shot "prior to police arrival," according to officials from the Sheriff's Office.

The Hennepin County medical examiner's office said it expects to soon release the names of the victims.
