I'm pretty sure my friend ordered the last Summit EPA and I had the third-to-last Grain Belt Premium ever served at Wilebski's Blues Saloon. The beer supply was running extra-thin but the crowd was relatively thick Saturday what owner Ted Wilebski promised was the final night at the bar he ran on and off and (as of this past New Year's Eve) on again since 1979. "We definitely have to be open at the new place next weekend for Kim," he said, referring to Kim Wilson. The Fabulous Thunderbirds leader is set to inaugurate the new Wilebski's in the former Club Cancun space Friday, near the intersection of Rice and Larpenteur in St. Paul. Closing-out duties at the old Frogtown location were left to D.C.-bred guitar hero Jimmy Thackery. Aside from the Nighthawks co-founder's often hair-raising guitar work, the show was (perhaps fittingly) nothing out of the ordinary. The most unusual bit came when Thackery's drummer, Mark Stutso, did a walking drum solo through the crowd, hitting his sticks on anything and everything in his path. When he whacked the big metal fan that was cooling off the stage, a whirlwind of dust blew up in his face. It was a good reminder how they never quite got the old place cleaned up before shutting it down again.
