Online account showed couple's prescription info

A nurse thinks an online insurance site shouldn't display both spouses' prescriptions.

Posted on behalf of fellow Whistleblower, Lora Pabst, who's not in the office today:

A Burnsville woman's health insurer recently made some changes that required her to order prescriptions through an online service. When the woman and her husband created accounts on the website, she was surprised that she could see his prescriptions as well as her own when she logged onto the site.

"I am assuming that when he logs in, he can also view my prescriptions," she wrote to Whistleblower. "Isn't that a direct violation of the HIPAA law? I am a nurse and am quite familiar with the law and this seems like a breach to me. I would think many people would want to keep their prescription information private."

Should one spouse know what drugs the other is taking? Do you think that online medical records are a threat to privacy?
