A 50-year-old man was killed and another man was wounded in an early morning shooting at a St. Paul duplex Saturday.

A family friend identified the victim as Roy Burgess, who she said lived in the duplex in the 400 block of Arlington Avenue E. across from Arlington Park in the Payne-Phalen neighborhood.

Officers were called to the home shortly after midnight and found the man and another 59-year-old man with gunshot wounds, according to police.

Preliminary information indicated that the shooting happened inside the home.

Burgess died at the scene. The other man was taken to Regions Hospital in St. Paul and treated for noncritical injuries.

Police said Saturday that investigators had limited, preliminary suspect information and were still working to piece together what had led to the shooting.

The family friend, who said she wished to remain anonymous out of fears for her own safety, said she had just stopped by to see Burgess on Thursday and was shocked when she first heard of his death.

"My friend's not here, and it's just hurting," she said.

Burgess, who was retired from the U.S. Army, lived at the duplex with his girlfriend, she said. The friend said she planned to hold a vigil in Burgess' memory.

According to state records, Burgess had numerous criminal convictions in recent years, including in 2010 for possession of burglary tools and 2009 for the sale of drugs.
