Officials release ID of man found fatally shot in front yard of Minneapolis home

The late-night shooting occurred near Franklin and Chicago avenues, police said.

A man was found shot to death early Monday outside a home in south Minneapolis, officials said.

The shooting occurred about 1 a.m. in the 1900 block of Elliot Avenue S., police said.

On Tuesday, the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as Darnell Allen Watkins, 40 of Minneapolis.

Metro Transit police officers near Chicago and Franklin avenues heard the gunfire and soon saw the man on the ground, according to Minneapolis police.

“Officers rendered immediate medical aid” to the man, a Minneapolis police statement read. “Despite all lifesaving efforts, the man died at the scene.”

No arrests have been announced.

There have been 45 homicides in Minneapolis this year, according to a Minnesota Star Tribune data base. That compares with 57 at this time last year in the city.
