One dead in head-on Hwy. 13 collision near Burnsville

One person is dead after a minivan swerved into oncoming traffic on Hwy. 13 in Dakota County on Tuesday, authorities said.

The accident happened shortly after rush-hour began, backing up traffic from the crash scene near Washburn Avenue in Burnsville, an area of major road projects. The name of the minivan driver, who died at a hospital, will be released on Wednesday, authorities said.

The Dodge Caravan was southbound on Hwy. 13 "and abruptly swerved" into northbound traffic, crashing head-on with an SUV, the State Patrol said.

Jeanna Meyer, 55, of Lakeville, driver of the SUV, suffered nonlife-threatening injuries. A sedan then rear-ended Meyer's SUV.

Major construction in the area includes a bridge being built at County Road 5 and Hwy. 13, along with ramps and a loop for the interchange, and the reconstruction of Hwy. 13 between Washburn and Nicollet avenues. The roadwork has reduced traffic on Hwy. 13 to one lane in each direction through mid-July, according to Dakota County officials.
