A 25-year-old Richfield man was killed Wednesday night when he lost control of his vehicle while trying to avoid slowing traffic on Interstate 35W in south Minneapolis and crashed into a road maintenance vehicle and a sound wall.

Samuel Andrew Spratt died at the scene, according to the Minnesota State Patrol. He was wearing a seat belt, the patrol said.

Minnesota Department of Transportation trucks were on the right shoulder with lights flashing as workers were cleaning up debris about 8:30 p.m., the time of the crash. Traffic was merging left when Spratt, who was driving a Nissan Versa, approached the scene. He overcorrected while trying to avoid slowing traffic and went back across the traffic lanes before striking a MnDOT truck and the concrete sound wall in the southbound lanes near 50th Street.

A 2014 Ford F-350 was also involved in the crash. Its driver and passenger were unharmed.
