OHIO BECKONS

Regardless of the outcome of Republican presidential primaries in Michigan and Arizona on Tuesday, Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum appear headed for a showdown next week in Ohio.

Both candidates are spending heavily in the state and plan to dash there later this week. It's one of 10 states that vote on Super Tuesday next week, with 419 delegates to the Republican National Convention at stake.

"An awful lot of Ohioans are just tuning in to this," said Terry Casey, a veteran Republican campaign strategist in that state. "It's going to be a sprint."

SNOBBERY AND COLLEGE

Rick Santorum calls it snobbery by President Obama to suggest that all students ought to go to college. On Monday, several of his fellow Republicans begged to differ.

Some GOP governors in Washington for a National Governors Association meeting took issue with Santorum's remark, which he made Saturday as he mounted a last-minute sprint for votes before the Michigan primary.

"I wish he'd said it differently," Virginia Gov. Robert McDonnell said of Santorum. "When you look at what's going on in other countries, China, India, the premium they put on higher education -- we've got to do better if we still want to be the global leader we are."

McDonnell, who has endorsed former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, was echoed by Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer, another Romney supporter, as well as Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, who have not endorsed any of the remaining candidates in the presidential race.
