Officer fired fatal shot that killed suicidal man at Mankato home

August 27, 2011 at 1:53AM

A police officer fired the shot that killed a suicidal man at a Mankato home, authorities said Friday.Authorities identified the man as Jonathan David Hess, 31, of Mankato.

Authorities said officers were called to the home in the 600 block of Byron Street shortly before 9:30 p.m. Thursday. Mankato police officer Timothy Patrick Spellacy arrived to find Hess armed outside the home.

"After several verbal attempts to get the suspect to drop his weapon, the suspect pointed his weapon at officer Spellacy, and officer Spellacy fired once, striking the suspect," the state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) said in a statement.

Hess died on the way to Mayo Clinic Health Systems in Mankato.

Spellacy, who has been on the Mankato force for more than 10 years, is on paid administrative leave, which is standard after officer-involved shootings.

The BCA is investigating the case. Anyone with information is asked to call 1-877-996-6222.
