An off-duty Hopkins police officer on a bicycle died in a collision with a car along a frontage road in Rogers early Sunday, reports said.

The incident occurred about 12:15 a.m. on Industrial Boulevard where it runs along Interstate 94 to the west of Hwy. 101, according to emergency dispatch audio.

Hopkins City Council Member Aaron Kuznia was among many friends and associates who identified the bicyclist in Facebook postings as Detective Kevin J. Hegyi, 45, of Rogers.

Hegyi was unconscious after he suffered severe head trauma, an officer on the scene reported to dispatch. Lifesaving efforts were unsuccessful.

Rogers Police Chief Dan Wills said the bicyclist and the motorist were going west. The chief said the driver was cooperating.
