In sort-of significant Oscar news, the Producers Guild of America released its best picture nominees. The 23-year-old PGA list has pretty consistently predicted the Academy Award field.
In the cut are "The Artist," "Bridesmaids," "The Descendants," "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," "The Help," "Hugo," "The Ides of March," "Midnight in Paris," "Moneyball" and "War Horse."
Locked out are '"J. Edgar," "The Tree of Life,""Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close," "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" and "Transformers 3."
In the best animated feature competition, the producer's association picked "The Adventures of Tintin," "Cars 2," "Kung Fu Panda 2," "Puss in Boots" and "Rango."
The Producers Guild of America Awards will be presented Jan. 21, three days before Oscar nominations are revealed.
How many of the PGA honorees will be Academy Award contenders? It's anyone's guess. After widening the best picture field to 10 nominees last year, the Motion Picture Academy's Board of Governors have decided to keep the precise number of 2012 best picture entries a secret right up until nominations are announced.
