Nutrition labeling: What's in an adjective?

Donna Byrne, professor of law at William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul, shared some guidelines regarding the standards that govern adjectives, such as "a good source of protein."

Good: Means that one serving supplies between 10 and 19 percent of the recommended daily value.

Excellent: Means that the serving supplies more than 20 percent of the daily value.

Rich: Same as "excellent."

Healthy: Can only be used if the product meets a number of requirements, so actually a very meaningful term.

Organic: Grown in conditions free of chemicals or pesticides for 36 months.

Natural: Mostly a feel-good word with no legal definition.
