NUCLEAR POWER IN MINNESOTA

Two nuclear power plants owned and operated by Xcel Energy are on the Mississippi River, one upstream and one downstream from the Twin Cities.

PRAIRIE ISLAND

Location: 40 miles southeast of the Twin Cities

Began operations: Unit 1 in 1973, Unit 2 in 1974

Type: Westinghouse pressurized water reactor

Reactors: 2

License expires: 2034

Output: 1,100 megawatts, enough to serve about 1 million homes

MONTICELLO

Location: 40 miles northwest of the Twin Cities

Began operations: 1971

Type: General Electric BWR-3, boiling water reactor

Reactors: 1

License expires: 2030

Output: 600 megawatts, enough to serve about 500,000 homes
