A girl just shy of her first birthday is expected to survive after she was accidentally backed over in western Anoka County.

The Anoka County Sheriff's Office was called at 12:22 p.m. Friday to the 5500 block of Old Viking Blvd. in Nowthen to a call of a child struck by a vehicle. Deputies discovered the girl partially underneath the tires of the vehicle.

The driver was the girl's 54-year-old grandmother, who said the girl and her mother were in the backyard when the mother stepped inside for a moment, leaving the girl unattended. The grandmother entered the garage to leave for an appointment and did not know the girl wandered over to her vehicle. As she backed up, she struck the girl. Deputies removed the girl from the vehicle's tires. She was taken by ambulance to Hennepin County Medical Center.

Authorities say alcohol is not suspected to be a factor. The accident remains under investigation by the Anoka County Sheriff's Office.
