A 19-year-old Northfield woman driving on an icy Hwy. 61 was killed Friday in a spin-out crash with another car near Two Harbors, Minn., the State Patrol said.

Alcohol was detected in the system of the surviving driver, according to the patrol.

The crash, about 3 p.m. near the Lafayette Bluff tunnel, closed the highway for more than an hour. Both cars were totaled, the patrol said.

No names were released Friday night, and everyone was wearing a seat belt.

The woman was driving north on Hwy. 61 when she spun out, went sideways and was hit broadside on the passenger side by a southbound car, the patrol said.

The driver of the southbound car, a 62-year-old Thunder Bay, Ontario, man, was not hurt. No detail was available about the amount of alcohol detected. His passenger, his 61-year-old wife, was taken to St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth with injuries that were not life-threatening, according to the patrol.
