A Northfield High School student was killed and a classmate critically injured in a collision with a semitrailer truck, officials said.

The crash occurred about 3:20 p.m. on Jan. 19 a few miles northwest of Northfield at 320th Street and Foliage Avenue, the Dakota County Sheriff’s Office said.

The car’s driver, 16-year-old Berlyn Berghuis, was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Her passenger, Anabelle Martinez, 16, was taken by air ambulance to HCMC, according to the Sheriff’s Office. A hospital spokeswoman said Martinez was in critical condition.

The semi’s driver was not hurt, Dakota County Sheriff Joe Leko said.

High School Principal Chris Dibble said in a statement on the school district’s website that Berghuis was a sophomore. He shared that Martinez’s condition had been stabilized.

“The death of a student is a tragedy that will impact each of us in different ways,” Dibble wrote. ”Our team is ready to support students during this difficult time.”

According to the Sheriff’s Office:

The semi was heading west on 320th, entered the intersection and collided with Berghuis’ southbound car as she attempted to turn left from Foliage onto 320th.

Leko said the semi driver had the right of way at the intersection.
