Northeast Winds to Howl

May 14, 2009 at 1:25PM

The arrival of a storm system will cause winds to howl across the NortheastThursday. The winds that pose the greatest danger of causing damage will whipfrom Lake Erie to northern New England. Neighboring parts of Canada areincluded in this threat zone. The air being forced to tightly squeeze in between the approaching storm anda strong high pressure center offshore will lead to the howling winds. Gusts to55 mph are anticipated over the Northeast's northern interior through theevening. Any heavy shower or thunderstorm that rolls through the regionthreatens to produce even higher peak winds.

Damage to trees and property could result from the strong winds. Treebranches could easily get knocked down. Larger trees may succumb to the highestgusts, especially where the ground is saturated from recent rain.

The howling winds will make driving difficult for high-profile vehicles.

Airline passengers should also be prepared for delays.
