North news briefs: Recycling Day set for April 28 in Andover

Recycling Day set for April 28The city will hold its Spring Recycling Day from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, April 28, at the Andover Public Works site, 1785 Crosstown Blvd. NW.

In addition to regular recyclables, the following items will be accepted at no charge: antifreeze (no oil mixed in); batteries (lead acid and rechargeable); bicycles (any condition; they're repaired and given away); scrap metal (metal only); usable household items (no junk or items needing repair); used eyeglasses (collected for an ongoing Andover Lions project).

Items for which a fee will be charged: appliances, carpeting, car seats, electronics and tires.

Fees will also be charged for fluorescent lamps, although Andover residents (not businesses) may recycle up to five per household for free. Don't tape them together; they may break.

No garbage or household hazardous wastes will be accepted. For further information, call 763-767-5175 .

Pet vaccination clinic will be held SaturdayA vaccination clinic for cats and dogs will be held from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday at the Anoka Police Department Animal Containment Center. It's sponsored by the department's Community Service Unit.

The Animal Containment Center is located behind the Parks Department building next to the Greenhaven Golf Course. Dogs and cats must be at least three months old and leashed or in a pet container. They must not be sick or injured.

Anoka to hold annual recycling drop-off dayAnoka's spring drop-off recycling day will take place from 8 a.m.-noon Saturday, April 28, at the city's Public Works Facility, 501 Pierce St.

Among the items accepted free will be refrigerators and freezers (no gas units); bicycles (any condition); cardboard and single-sort materials; ink cartridges, eyeglasses, hearing aids, cell phones; paper shredding; scrap metal (all non-metal parts and fluids must be removed); lead-acid auto batteries; household goods and clothing in good and salable condition (bedding, books, clothing, kitchen items, small appliances, and the like); computer speakers (pairs), keyboards, home phones; computer towers; notebook computers; wires, cords and cables.

In addition, up to 30 fluorescent lamps per vehicle will be accepted free; a charge of 50 cents each will apply thereafter. Fees will be charged for appliances, carpeting, TVs and computer monitors; mattresses, box springs, futon cushions and sleeper sofas; and tires.

April 28 Pet Walk will aid K-9 unitsThe Blaine Public Safety Association will hold its second annual Pet Walk on Saturday, April 28, to benefit public safety canine teams. The event will take place from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at Lake Commons Park. The cost is $25 for a first pet, and $15 for a second one. The event is free and is open to boys and girls ages 7-14. Boys and girls compete separately. There are four levels of competition: locals, sectionals, team championships and the national finals at the Major League All-Star Game. Saturday's EarthFest to feature Will StegerThe third annual EarthFest, linked to Earth Day, will be held from noon-4 p.m. Saturday at Brooklyn Center High School, 6500 Humboldt Av. N. The event is free.

Arctic explorer Will Steger will give the keynote address at noon, and 60 exhibits and activities will run from 1-4 p.m.

There will be offerings from the Bakken Museum, Art Start and Kidwind, and attendees will have a chance to learn about subjects from how to compost and reduce toxicity in their home and garden to the latest energy-saving tips.

Green Expo is coming to the Civic CenterCoon Rapids will hold its third annual Green Expo from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday. The event is free and will be held at the Coon Rapids Civic Center, 11155 Robinson Drive.
