Photographers asked to give their best shotAnoka County is inviting amateur photographers to take part in a contest that will yield the photo for the cover of the county's 2013-14 "Recyclopedia," a publication that is a reference book to help residents recycle, reuse, reduce and dispose of materials safely.

The contest is open to county residents only, and the photo must be taken in the county. Photos should be submitted electronically and have a minimum size of 5 inches by 5 inches at 300 dpi. The preferred format is jpeg.

Photos should be submitted to PhotoContest@co.anoka. mn.us and should include contact information -- name, address, phone and e-mail -- as well as specify when and where the photo was taken.

Deadline is Oct. 19. Photos won't be returned, and participants give the county permission to use the photos for educational or promotional purposes. For further information, call Anoka County Integrated Waste Management at 763-323-5730.

Anoka High School opens 'Legally Blonde'"Legally Blonde," the fall musical at Anoka High School, will open with 7:30 performances on Nov. 2, 3, 8, 9 and 10 and a 2:00 matinee on Nov. 4.

Open Mic Night at Murzyn HallThursday night will be an Open Mic music night at Murzyn Hall's La Belle Lounge. Guests are invited to step up and sing from 7 to 10 p.m.

Moms Club hosting craft boutiqueThe Moms Club will host its second annual Craft and Vendor Boutique from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Nov. 3 at Coon Rapids Evangelical Free Church, 2650 128th Av. NW. in Coon Rapids.

The boutique will feature local vendors and artists, as well as home-based businesses. All proceeds go to the group's Anoka County Adopt-a-Family service project to support families in need over the holidays.

Last year's event raised more than $1,500.

Lions Club hosts community breakfastThe Lions are hosting an all-you-can-eat breakfast from 8 a.m.-noon Oct. 28 at the Coon Rapids VFW, 1919 Coon Rapids Blvd.

Tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for seniors 62 and older and children younger than 12. Children under 5 are free.

Stories of the autumn skiesBy popular demand, a talk about the stars in the fall skies is making a return engagement at the Golden Valley Library at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 23.

Bill Arden of Augsburg College will talk about animals and mythologies in the constellations, including love stories and adventures. If the skies are clear and the weather is good, part of the presentation will be outside.

Kids ages 8 and older are welcome. Refreshments will be served at 6:15 p.m. Registration with the Golden Valley Seniors is required by Oct. 18 at 763-512-2339.

Cyberbullying event for parents and kidsThe city Human Rights Commission's next Know Your Neighbor theme is "Put Cyberbullying on Ice."

The educational event on the pros and cons of technology use among kids will be held at 6:30 p.m. Friday at New Hope City Hall.

'Beatlemania' concert will aid Cooper band"Beatlemania" will bring an evening of great music to the Robbinsdale Cooper High School auditorium from 7-9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9.

Cooper's Marching Hawks, joined by a variety of guests, will present the "Beatlemania" concert to raise money for the band's uniform fund.

The event also will feature the Shady Oak Groove Society, the WCCO Blues Band and Joey Molland, formerly of the British band Badfinger. Don Shelby, retired WCCO TV anchor, will host.

In addition to Beatles songs, the evening will include jazz, blues and marching band music.
