Open houses ahead at fire stations
October is National Fire Prevention Month, the week of Oct. 5-11 is Fire Prevention Week, and open houses are being held in the coming days and weeks at numerous fire departments. Here's a partial rundown in the north metro:
Columbia Heights
The Columbia Heights Fire Department has an open house scheduled for 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, at the station at 825 41st Av. NE, Columbia Heights. Among the highlights: station tours, demonstrations, fire truck displays, information booths, antique fire truck rides, more.
Spring Lake Park- Blaine-Mounds View
The Spring Lake Park-Blaine-Mounds View Fire Department will hold open houses:
• Saturday, Sept. 27, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Fire Station 1, 1710 County Hwy. 10, Spring Lake Park.
• Monday, Sept. 29, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Fire Station 2, 1149 89th Av. NE, Blaine.
• Saturday, Oct. 4, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Fire Station 3, 11920 Ulysses St. NE, Blaine.
• Saturday, Oct. 11, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., 10290 Lever St. NE, Blaine.
Brooklyn Park
The Brooklyn Park Fire Department will hold an open house at the Central Fire Station from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 4. The event is free and open to the public. Attendees will have a chance to chat with firefighters and the station's mascot, Sparky the dog. Activities and features include a kitchen demo fire, bingo, blood pressure checks and an inflatable jumpy. Emergency vehicles, including a police SWAT vehicle, will be on display for kids to climb on. Snacks will include ice cream and tacos in a bag. The first 50 kids ages 6 and younger will receive a free T-shirt. The Central Fire Station is located at 5700 85th Av. N., just east of Zane Avenue.
