North news briefs: Kids' Triathlon set for July 25

The Blaine Kids Triathlon will be held from 8-10 a.m. July 25 at Lakeside Commons Park, 3020 Lake Pkwy. The competition is for ages 7-14 and has a 100- or 165-yard swim, a 2.3-mile bike ride and a 1-mile run. The fee is $30 for residents and $33 for nonresidents.

The Blaine Triathlon for adults will be held Sept. 12, also at Lakeside Commons Park. It will include a 0.3-mile swim, a 16.7-mile bike ride and a 3.5-mile run. It was moved from May this year to give swimmers a shot at warmer water.

The Blaine City Council voted last month to limit the number of therapeutic massage licenses that can be issued.

The new restriction allows only one license for every 2,500 residents or a total of 24 licenses in the city. (Blaine has a population of about 62,000.) The city currently has 27 licensed businesses. The three most recent applicants can still stay, but the city can't accept any new applications.

The Brooklyn United Methodist Church will host a mega sale to benefit the Community Emergency Assistance Program, Brooklyn Avenues Shelter and local church outreach programs.

The garage sale will take place July 22-25, with sales from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday. For more information, go to bumc.org.

The annual series, which allows residents to meet council members and talk with staff about projects going on in the city, concludes with events July 28 at Moor Park, 10921 Magnolia St., and Aug. 25 at Riverview Park, 2420 105th Av. The events run from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., with a presentation at 7 p.m., fire trucks, police cars and other displays from city departments.

The Fridley Historical Society is hosting appraiser Mark Moran on Aug. 9.

The event will take place from 2-7 p.m. at the American Legion, 7365 Old Central Av. To have an item appraised, which costs $15 per item, leave a message at the Fridley History Center at 763-571-0120. A reservation is required; the free event is open to the public.

The 7 p.m. July 25 Capri Big Band performance has been canceled.

But north Minneapolis artists' work will now be on display at the Capri from noon to 5 p.m. July 25 during the FLOW Northside Arts Crawl. For more information about the event, go to northmpls.org/flow2015. The Capri Theater is located at 2027 W. Broadway Ave., in Minneapolis.

Metro Transit will host open houses on the Blue Line Extension in July and August.

Participants can learn more about the project and give feedback about proposed stations, parking and pedestrian/bike access. The open houses will take place July 27 at Crystal Community Center in Crystal, July 28 at Robbinsdale Middle School, July 29 at Harrison Recreation Center, July 30 at Golden Valley City Hall and Aug. 11 at North Hennepin Community College. Ramsey has officially met all criteria to become a Minnesota Heart Safe Community.

An award presentation was held last week at the City Council meeting. The city was given a Heart Safe Community Certificate, an official Heart Safe-Ramsey logo and two Heart Safe road signs.

Regularly scheduled monthly training sessions have been canceled. However, training will still be held at various events. The next concert in Ramsey's The Draw 2015 Summer Event Series will take place July 23.

The concert will take place from 6:30-8 p.m. at The Draw, 7401 E. Ramsey Parkway, and feature Cherry Gun.
