Father Hennepin fete is this weekend

Champlin will hold its three-day Father Hennepin Festival this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, June 7-9.

The festival carnival opens at 5 p.m. Friday at Mississippi Point Park, and the festival parade starts at 6:30 p.m. at West River Road.

The carnival will run until midnight Friday, from 11 a.m. to midnight Saturday and from 11 to 6 on Sunday.

Among the festival events are a pie-eating contest, a car show, power-boat races, music, ice cream socials and fireworks at 10:15 p.m. Saturday.

GOLDEN VALLEY

Four are inducted into city Hall of Fame

A World War II hero and the actor who played the Lone Ranger are among the new members of Golden Valley's Hall of Fame.

The new inductees are:

• Chester Ptaszek, also known as Chester Bird, who was one of the thousands of U.S. soldiers who stormed Omaha Beach in 1944. Ptaszek, who was in the Army infantry, died at age 35 in France on Aug. 1 of that year. American Legion Post 523 is named after Ptaszek.

• Lawrence Brown, also known as Larry or Bubba, a Minneapolis native who lived in Golden Valley for more than 40 years. He was a World War II vet, an athlete, helped create the income tax withholding system in Uganda, coached youth sports and was a co-founder of the Ronald McDonald House in Minneapolis. He died in 2012.

• Christopher Ewald, a pioneer whose dairy farm became the Ewald Brothers Dairy, who provided milk and other products to homes and stores in the Twin Cities. He also was city constable. He died in 1938.

• Clayton Moore, who was an actor who appeared in more than 70 movies and played the Lone Ranger in more than 200 episodes of the popular 1950s TV series. Moore moved to Golden Valley in the 1960s to be closer to his wife's family. He was known for handling out replicas of silver bullets to children in Golden Valley. Eventually he moved to California. He died in 1999.

Camden Music School summer registration

Registration is underway for summer classes at the Camden Music School, with classes available for people of all ages and abilities.

Participants can sign up for a full eight-week term, from June 24-Aug. 15, or one of two four-week terms: June 24-July 18 or July 22-Aug. 15.

Musikgarten classes are offered for ages birth to 8. There are individual, team and group instrumental and vocal lessons for people ages 8 and up, and ensembles for all ages.

'Live on the Drive' starts June 13

This year's "Live on the Drive" concert series will open Thursday, June 13, with a performance by the Bruce Henry Band and special guest Debbie Duncan. The free outdoor concert will run from 6 to 8 p.m. on Victory Memorial Drive at 34th Avenue N. in Minneapolis.

QCTV offering graduation webcasts

The community TV operation QCTV is posting webcasts of graduation ceremonies at Andover, Anoka and Champlin Park high schools. They can be found at www.qctv.org/grad. The Andover and Champlin Park graduations were held Sunday at Mariucci Arena in Minneapolis and Anoka's was in Anoka on Monday.

RAMSEY

5K run/walk will aid VA's Fisher House

A 5K run and walk will be held Saturday, June 15, in Ramsey, with proceeds going to benefit the Fisher House near the Minneapolis VA Hospital.

The Flag Day run/walk, sponsored by the Minnesota chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, will begin at 8 a.m. at the Northwest Metro VA Clinic, 7545 Veterans Drive in Ramsey.

Registration is $25 through June 13 or $30 on the day of the event.

The Fisher House is a place where patients and family members can stay while a veteran is receiving major medical care at the VA hospital. It is one of 60 in the United States and Germany, offered by a private-public partnership.
