Family Night Fun Float is coming on FridayThe Brooklyn Center Community Center will hold another TGIF Family Night Fun Float from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday.

All are invited to bring their favorite floats to the pool: inner tubes, air mattresses, noodles, beach balls, floating animals. General admission rates apply.

Saturday event will mark city's diversityThe "many faces of Brooklyn Park" will be celebrated from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Community Activity Center.

The event, featuring food, music, dancing and other activities, is intended to educate people, provide resources and otherwise mark the city's diverse cultures.

Kids' car seat program for low-income familiesThe Coon Rapids police and fire departments will be distributing child passenger seats to low-income residents of Coon Rapids during two programs, one on Thursday and the other on Feb. 16.

The first program will deal with booster seats for kids ages 4-8 who weigh 40 to 80 pounds and are shorter than 4 feet, 9 inches. It will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday.

The second will deal with infant/toddler seats for children under age 4 and under 40 pounds. That will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Feb. 16.

The program is for low-income residents, and participation is by appointment only. No walk-ins will be accepted.

The programs are made possible by a grant from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety and will be offered at the Coon Rapids Police Department on Robinson Drive.

Free tax service will be offeredFree help with taxes will be available on Tuesdays and Wednesdays through April 11 for senior citizens, disabled adults and families with low to moderate incomes.

The service will be offered from 8:30 a.m. to noon on a first-come, first-served basis at the Coon Rapids Civic Center, 11155 Robinson Drive, Coon Rapids.

Cancer support group will meet todayA free prostate cancer support group will meet at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at North Memorial Outpatient Center, 3435 W. Broadway, Robbinsdale.

Jeremy Bell will discuss an advanced biopsy procedure for the prostate gland.

'Polar Bear Plunge' scheduled for Feb. 11Anoka County will take part in the "Special Olympics Minnesota Polar Bear Plunge" on Saturday, Feb. 11, holding a plunge at Crooked Lake in Coon Rapids.

The plunge was first held in 1998 in St. Paul and has expanded to 15 locations. This is the first year for Anoka County. As the name indicates, the event benefits Special Olympics Minnesota. Each plunger is required to raise at least $75 to participate.

The Crooked Lake plunge will begin at 1 p.m. Participants and spectators will be able to take free shuttle buses to the site from Andover Lanes in Andover and Broadway Pizza in Coon Rapids, starting at 11 a.m. The shuttles will return to those sites after the plunge.
