North news briefs: Century Jazz Fest set for this weekend in White Bear

Century Jazz Fest set for this weekendCentury College will host its 24th annual Jazz Festival Saturday and Sunday in the West Campus Theatre.

Jazz saxophonist Ed Calle -- who has performed with Rhianna, Gloria Estefan, Julio Eglesias, Extreme and Bobby Caldwell -- will appear with the 17-piece Century Jazz Ensemble for two shows: Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m.

Receptions before the shows, at 6:45 p.m. on Saturday and 1:45 p.m. on Sunday, will feature complimentary wine, cheese and dessert. The Joel Shapira Quartet will perform during the receptions.

Tickets are $20; student price is $10. Proceeds go to student scholarships through the Century College Foundation.

Exhibit highlights historical mapsA Minnesota Historical Society traveling exhibit, "Minnesota on the Map," which features 12 historic maps from the society's collection and a video station, will be on display on Saturdays through March 9.

The Fridley Historical Society is adding a number of maps from its own collection that aren't ordinarily on display. The exhibit is at the Fridley History Center, 611 Mississippi St. in Fridley.

Fire & Ice Festival medal hunt beginsPlymouth's annual Fire & Ice Medallion Hunt will continue in the weeks leading up to the Fire & Ice Festival on Feb. 2 at Parkers Lake Park.

The 24th annual event, sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Department, includes weekly clues to help Plymouth residents search for the medallion. There is no registration for the free event.

The resident who finds the medallion receives a $250 Visa gift card. Weekly clues will be on the city website, or call the Recreation Leisure Line at 763-509-5213 to hear the clues.

The first clue was released Jan. 10, and the other clues will be released on Thursday, on Jan. 24 and Jan. 31.

The medallion is hidden on city property, above ground, and part of it will be in plain view. The prize will be awarded Feb. 2. All Plymouth residents are eligible except city employees and their families.

Through music by Minnesota composer Janika Vandervelde, children will be introduced to orchestra instruments and learn how they make their sound.

Before and after each concert, kids will get a chance to meet the musicians and try the instruments.
