North news briefs: Brooklyn Park hosts 25th anniversary ice show

A trio of skating organizations will present their annual ice show this weekend at the Brooklyn Park Community Activity Center.

Three performances of "That Was Then — This Is Now," by the Three Rivers Figure Skating Club and the Brooklyn Park and Champlin Skating schools, will be given: at 7 p.m. Friday, April 11, and 1 and 6 p.m. Saturday, April 12.

The event will mark the 25th anniversary of the ice show. It will feature 80 skaters, from Brooklyn Park, Maple Grove, Osseo and Anoka.

Tickets are $5 presale and $6 at the door for students ages 5-17 and people age 60 and over, and $8 presale and $9 at the door for adults 18-59. Advance tickets can be bought at the main window of the Community Activity Center, which is located at 5600 85th Av. N., Brooklyn Park.

The Anoka-Hennepin School District will host a free youth coaches workshop on Monday, April 14. Coaches and booster club members are invited to attend the session, titled "Why We Play." It will run from 5:45 to 9 p.m. at the Coon Rapids High School auditorium, 2340 Northdale Blvd. NW., Coon Rapids.

The district is teaming up with the Anoka-Hennepin Education Foundation and the Minnesota State High School League to organize the event.

Presenters will discuss the importance of responding to mistakes positively and defining success by more than the numbers on the scoreboard.

Christina Wilson, a nursing instructor at Anoka Technical College, is one of 30 people named Outstanding Educators for 2014 by the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system.

Wilson and the others will be honored by the MnSCU Board of Trustees at a ceremony on April 23. Wilson, a Nursing Assistant and Practical Nursing instructor at Anoka Technical College since 1991, was nominated by ATC President Kent Hanson.

Reenactors will present "Civil War Camp and Ladies Aid Society" from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Rum River Library in Anoka. The event will re-create the life of soldiers away at camp as well as an Aid Society meeting back home.

The annual Green Expo on sustainable living is set for Saturday, May 10, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Schwan Center on the campus of the National Sports Center, 1750 105th Av. NE in Blaine. The event will feature educational topics, products and speakers, among other things. Admission is free.

The event includes live music, police and fire department demonstrations, a silent auction and a casual dinner of hotdogs, chips, soda or water.

Anoka-Ramsey Community College will offer a free suicide prevention workshop on Wednesday, April 16.

Two one-hour sessions will be offered, starting at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. in the Legacy Room on the Coon Rapids campus, 11200 Mississippi Blvd. W.

Presenters include licensed psychologist Davin Maijala and Nikki Jagodzinski, a suicide-prevention coordinator. Both are from St. Cloud State University.

Nationally, suicide is the third-leading cause of death among 15- to 24-year-olds.

New Hope will hold an open house on Thursday, April 17, so residents can see the concept plan for a Hy-Vee grocery store on the former Kmart site at 4200/4300 Xylon Av. N. The event will take place from 4:30 to 8 p.m. at New Hope City Hall, 4401 Xylon Av. N.

The City Council recently approved a preliminary development agreement for the site with Anderson Cos. and Hy-Vee. Anderson Cos. proposes a 90,000-square-foot Hy-Vee store that would include a sit-down restaurant, deli, liquor store, pharmacy and organic food section.

A prostate cancer support group will meet at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 23, at North Memorial Medical Center, 3300 Oakdale Av. N., Robbinsdale. Dr. Christopher Weight, a urologist from the University of Minnesota, will speak to the group, and a question-and-answer segment will follow.
