Inhumane society
The couple who neglected 125 cats in their home face charges. Good. Now what charge does the Animal Humane Society face for killing those same cats out of hand? There is nothing "humane" about gassing 125 cats who had suffered neglect for years. The Humane Society's decision was convenient for the organization. But humane? No. Not by any standard.
The Humane Society ought to be setting an example of kindness to animals for our community. Instead it is lagging years behind the actions of the hundreds of tiny, underfunded Minnesota animal rescue groups who really do put the animals' welfare first. Wake up, AHS.

Let Liberians stay
Deporting Liberians means deporting Americans. These immigrants have U.S. citizen children and spouses in numbers that may exceed the number of Liberians now here on temporary status. They moved on with their lives in a productive manner that your editorial outlines, paying taxes, buying homes, caring for our grandparents ["Grant Liberians a path to citizenship," Star Tribune editorial, March 11.
If we truly value families, let's put our policy where our mouths are and recognize that U.S. children are better off with both parents rather than having a Liberian parent forced to leave the family behind, or worse, forcing U.S. kids to leave their U.S. relatives, their schools, their friends behind because they want to live with mom and dad. Let's let these good people live in the security that they can earn their right to be here as legal residents.
