No. 3 U women's hockey team hands No. 1 Wisconsin first loss

The No. 3 Gopher women's hockey team upset No. 1 Wisconsin in Madison, taking a 3-2 victory from the Badgers on Sunday.

It was Wisconsin's first loss since November 2010, and Minnesota's first victory at the Kohl Center since 2007.

The Gophers improved to 5-1-0 overall and 3-1-0 in the WCHA, while Wisconsin moved to 5-1-0 overall and 3-1-0 in the league.

U junior defenseman Megan Bozek got her third goal of the season just over 11 minutes into the game. She took a shot from the blue line and got it past Badgers goalie Alex Rigsby; junior Sarah Davis had the assist.

Wisconsin tied the score at 2 on a Brooke Ammerman goal, but the Gophers responded with one by sophomore Amanda Kessel. Sarah Erickson had the assist, putting the Gophers up 3-2 with 11 minutes left. The U stayed out of the penalty box and outshot Wisconsin 10-4 in the third, and goalie Noora Raty made the saves to keep the Gophers ahead by a goal.

U ekes out a soccer win Gophers junior Allie Phillips got the lone goal of the day in the 60th minute of play to give the women's soccer team a much-needed 1-0 road victory over Northwestern and keep their Big Ten Conference tournament hopes alive. The triumph boosts fellow junior Cat Parkhill to 31 career wins, which ranks her third all-time in Minnesota history.

Etc. • Belle Plaine, Minn., native Ryan Dungey finished second at the Monster Energy Cup on Saturday night in Las Vegas behind Ryan Villopoto, who won the richest payout in motocross history -- $1 million. "Congrats to Villopoto," said Dungey, who finished with two seconds and a third in the three motos. "A million dollars is a lot of money."

• The Big Ten Network will show a tape of the Gophers volleyball team's 3-2 weekend loss to No. 5 Nebraska at 7 p.m. Monday. The match at Williams Arena drew a crowd of 9,354 on Saturday night.
