NFL too sensitive about winter weather alerts

Just play the game.

Four Downs while wondering when and how we all became so frightened of, well, everything ...

FIRST DOWN:

An NFL game was postponed not because of snow, but because of the forecast of snow. Somewhere, the ghost of Vince Lombardi is shaking his head at how soft we've become, and how everything always has to perfect.

The latest storm of the century got all the weather forecasters lathered up. Then they did what they're paid to do: SCARE THE YOU KNOW WHAT OUT OF THE REST OF US.

Apparently, the storm was bad, but didn't hit Philly as hard as predicted. A lot of snow fell -- 11.8 inches -- but from what people are saying, it wasn't quite the storm of the century, or worthy of moving the Vikings-Eagles game back by TWO DAYS!

Here's a suggestion: Unless lightning is in the area, just play the game. Don't worry about how the fans will get to and from the game. They'll manage. And if they don't, and they have to stay home, so be it. Just play the game.

SECOND DOWN:

Coach of the Year. Who gets it? There are a lot of candidates, but I keep coming back to one guy -- Bill Belichick. The Patriots' coach went into the season with a young, suspect defense, injuries and rookies at key positions. Fifteen games later, he's 13-2 with homefield advantage throughout the playoffs locked up. His team is plus-27 in turnover ratio, has just nine giveaways and hasn't turned the ball over in a league-record seven games.

Everything most coaches only talk about, Belichick is achieving this season. His team has gotten progressively better, doesn't beat itself and is peaking at the right time.

THIRD DOWN:

What's up with Tampa? The Bucs were one of three teams that had TV blackouts on Sunday. The Bucs were a three-win team in 2009. On Sunday, they beat Seattle to improve to 9-6 to stay alive in the playoff hunt. This is an exciting, young team on the rise. It's overcome a lot to improve by at least six games. Yet they couldn't sell out Sunday's game.

The three blockouts (Cincinnati and Oakland were the others) give the NFL 23 on the season, one more than last year and the most since 30 in 2004.

FOURTH DOWN:

It gets old hearing the Vikings' apologists use injuries as an excuse for what happened this season. An NFL team can't expect to go into a season with the same 53 players lasting all 16 games. The successful franchises like the Patriots, Colts and Packers -- to name just three from this season -- find a way to overcome injuries. The Colts and Packers have had more injuries than the Vikings, yet they're playing for playoff spots on Sunday.

The Patriots also have been rocked by injuries. Heck, they started their third right guard (Ryan Wendell) on Sunday. And a defensive lineman who came from the UFL (Eric Moore) also started.

Most teams sustain a number of injuries. The good ones know what to do when that happens.
