A $52 million athletic and recreation complex being built at the University of St. Thomas might be open by the end of August, about a month ahead of schedule, school officials said Friday.
New St. Thomas athletic complex nearly ready
The private Catholic college on St. Paul's Summit Avenue received its certificate of occupancy for the Anderson Athletic and Recreation Complex on Friday. An official announcement on the opening date, hours of operation and membership options will be made in two to three weeks, said Jane Canney, vice president for student affairs.
Mark Vangsgard, vice president for business affairs, called getting the certificate a "milestone" and said it means the building has passed code requirements and the contractor can begin turning it over to the school.
The building was to open in October, but because contractors finished their work early, some athletic teams -- football, volleyball and cross-country -- will have access to locker facilities starting Aug. 16.
The building is named after Lee and Penny Anderson, who made a $60 million gift to the school that also helped fund two other projects: a 725-space parking facility that opened in 2009 and a student center that is under construction and slated to open in 2012.
