In conjunction with its Heritage Days celebration, the city of Vadnais Heights will hold a grand opening for its new North Service Center at 6 p.m. Thursday.

The 72,000-square-foot facility, built at a cost of $12.3 million, will house the city's public works department, a fire station and Vadnais Heights Commons, a community space that will be the site of several festival events this weekend.

RIBBON-CUTTING: City leaders will participate in a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the west entrance of the building at County Road F and Clover Avenue.

TOUR THE NEW DIGS: Tours will be available until 8:30 p.m.

MORE CONSTRUCTION: When construction began in 2009, it was the largest expenditure ever made by the city. Since then, ground has been broken on a $26.9 million sports complex to include a 100,000-square-foot ice arena, 100,000-square-foot domed field, three commercial buildings and renovation of an existing building to house restaurants, shops and other businesses.

The sports complex is due to open Nov. 1; the commercial buildings will open periodically over the next two years.
