The public will get its first look at Hennepin County Medical Center's new Medical Intensive Care Unit today.

Tours of the 24-bed unit designed with input from patients, family members and hospital staff will be offered from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. today.

Single patient rooms feature flat screen TVs, thermostats, light-filtering window blinds, space for families and personal belongings and ample space for necessary equipment.

The unit also includes family rooms, large windows, nursing stations between every two rooms and improved layout to increase accessibly.

The Medical Intensive Care Unit is the first phase of an $80 million upgrade to the facility at 8th Street and Park Av. S. Plans call for locating inpatient medical and surgical intensive care to a single floor. The plan also calls for replacing the Family Medical Center in south Minneapolis and acquisition of land for a new outpatient clinic and education facility in downtown Minneapolis.
