Valleyfair visitors can soar high above the park next year on a new ride called the North Star.

The amusement park in Shakopee announced the new ride on Thursday and is expecting a spring 2017 debut. The ride's name is a tribute to Minnesotans' fervor for the outdoors and Lake Superior.

Riders can sit in pairs on a chain-link swing on the 230-foot-tall ride. Buckle up, because the ride then soars 20 stories into the air, reaching speeds of 40 miles per hour, while the tower propels up and down and feet dangle. A suggestion: snack responsibly.

The North Star will be the park's second-tallest, behind the 275-foot Power Tower. It's manufactured by Australia-based Funtime. The newcomer will replace the Enterprise ride, which will be retired on August 21 after 38 years.

Construction will begin later this month and be completed by mid-December.
