Gophers junior Jerry Netland won the discus title Friday night at the Mesa Classic in Mesa, Ariz. Netland had a season-best throw for the Gophers with a distance of 159 feet, 8 inches.
A pair of Minnesota throwers accomplished the rare feat of competing in two meets in a single day. After competing in the Mesa Classic, Aaron Studt and Andy Bastian drove to nearby Tempe to compete in the hammer throw of the Sun Angel Classic.
Studt placed second in the hammer (182-1) at the Mesa Classic and 14th in the Sun Angel (170-0). He was also fifth in the discus (154-10) at Mesa. Bastian finished fourth in the hammer at Mesa (177-0) and 13th at the Sun Angel (173-6).
Gophers women's tennis The Gophers women's tennis team ended a three-match losing streak with a 7-0 victory over Wisconsin at the Baseline Tennis Center. The Gophers (12-8, 2-5 Big Ten) won two of three doubles matches to earn the doubles point and then swept the singles.
Karina Chiarelli and Lindsay Risebrough started the day for the U with an 8-2 victory at No. 1 doubles. Chiarelli gave Minnesota a 2-0 lead with a 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 3 singles.
Gophers men's tennis The Gophers men's tennis team defeated Northwestern, 6-1, in Evanston, Ill., for its third consecutive Big Ten victory. The Gophers (5-14, 3-4 Big Ten) won the doubles point and then won five of six singles matches.
Etc. • Sean Pollock's goal 79 seconds into overtime lifted the Swarm to a 15-14 come-from-behind victory Saturday over the Philadelphia Wings at the Xcel Energy Center, moving the Swarm (9-4) past the Wings (9-5) into first place in the NLL East Division standings. The Swarm's Dan Marohl scored a power-play goal with two seconds remaining in regulation to force the overtime.
