Negative is in the eye of the beholder

When is an ad an "attack?"

The new call for an end to negative ads, reinforces the age old adage: Negative is in the eye of the beholder.

On Thursday, DFL candidate for governor Mark Dayton and GOP Party deputy chair Michael Brodkorb both said an Alliance for a Better Minnesota ad that linked Republican candidate Tom Emmer's past drunk driving arrests to his legislative record, was a negative ad.

But Denise Cardinal wouldn't call it an attack ad.

"To me it is just more an ad about his record," she said. That record happens to be negative, she said.

Dayton said the part about Emmer's legislative record was fair game but the record of drunk driving charges wasn't.

And while Dayton called a Republican spot denigrated his Senate record a smear, Brodkorb said, "I would say it's a respectful contrast ad that discusses his record."

What do you think?
