A 25-year-old old man will be nearly twice his age by the time he's done serving his prison sentence for robbing at gunpoint three Twin Cities sandwich shops of a total of $464.
Michael S. Luedtke, who grew up in the Pine City area and later lived in Eden Prairie, was sentenced Wednesday in federal court to 24 years and seven months in prison for holding up two Subway sandwich shops and one Quiznos in the final days of 2011.
Luedtke, who pleaded guilty in July to interference with commerce by robbery and possession of a firearm while committing a violent crime, will serve virtually all of his prison term behind bars because the federal system has no parole.
Also working against him was the fact that Luedtke was considered a career criminal and prohibited under federal law from possessing a firearm. His criminal history includes convictions in Hennepin County for terroristic threats, robbery and aggravated robbery.
By age 17, Luedtke had been convicted as a minor for financial transaction card fraud, fifth-degree assault, domestic assault, receiving a stolen firearm, tampering with a motor vehicle and first-degree criminal damage to property, court records show. He also has abused drugs and alcohol for years, records show.
According to the plea agreement:
On the night of Dec. 29, Luedtke robbed a Subway at 1748 Lexington Av. in Roseville, pointing his sawed-off shotgun at employees and customers while ordering them to the floor. He fled with all $310 from the cash register.
Near the start of lunchtime on Dec. 31, Luedtke demanded money from the register of the Quiznos in Roseville. The manager ran outside, with the gun-toting Luedtke giving chase into the parking lot.
