Beasts of burden

"Beasts of No Nation," being released simultaneously on Netflix and in theaters, confirms director Cary Fukunaga's status as a power in cinema ("Jane Eyre") and on the home screen (helming the entire first season of HBO's "True Detective"). Movie critic Colin Covert calls the African-set war drama a "striking, muscular thriller." Listen for star Idris Elba's name to be bantered about during Oscar season. Now streaming at netflix.com

Captain Morgan

"Saturday Night Live" is off to a less than stellar start with early hosts Amy Schumer and Miley Cyrus getting stuck in the kind of mediocre sketches that should have been cut in dress rehearsal. Still, I can't help but look forward to welcoming Tracy Morgan, back after a near-fatal car accident. If his surprise appearance at the Emmys is any indication, his snark has made a full recovery. 10:29 p.m. Saturday, KARE, Ch. 11

Turn to Stone

Tom Selleck celebrates his 10th year as Robert B. Parker's celebrated detective in "Jesse Stone: Lost in Paradise," a new case that features appearances by William Devane, Gloria Reuben and Luke Perry. Now if only Mr. Mustache would take Magnum, P.I. out for another spin. 8 p.m. Sunday, Hallmark Channel
