Games people play

Listening to Howard Cosell provide color commentary while Adrienne Barbeau tackles the obstacle course is one of my favorite childhood memories, which is why I'm so thrilled to re-watch "Battle of the Network Stars," a campy, sweaty relic from the '70s and '80s that deserves a reboot. 6 p.m. ESPN Classic

Jack of all trades

Philip Seymour Hoffman most certainly had great acting roles ahead if he hadn't passed away from a drug overdose. But what would he have accomplished as a filmmaker? You'll most likely agree that he showed great promise with 2010's "Jack Goes Boating," the only movie he ever directed. Hoffman and Amy Ryan play a couple stumbling and mumbling into love. 7 p.m. ThisTV.

A touch of class

TCM once again turns over its August lineup to a Summer of Stars, dedicating each day of the month to a different film performer. This particular day belongs to one of cinema's sharp-dressed men, Adolphe Menjou, perhaps best known for his turn in 1937's "Stage Door." 10:15 p.m. TCM
