Natural gas leak prompts change of school for Chanhassen students

March 11, 2011 at 2:20AM

About 500 children en route to a grade school in Chanhassen were detoured to a different school Thursday because of concerns about a gas leak.

Staff at Chanhassen Elementary School smelled the gas, so students on the way to school were bused to Bluff Creek Elementary instead.

The action prompted district officials to notify parents on the school's website.

District spokeswoman Nancy Kracke said the odor came from a small gas leak in a pipe-fitting in the school's boiler room, and gas company workers fixed it quickly.

The fire marshal declared the building safe at 9:15 a.m., so the students and staff left Bluff Creek and were delivered to their regular school about an hour later.

As an eviction crisis has seemed increasingly likely this summer, everyone in the housing market has made the same plea to Washington: Send money — lots of it — that would keep renters in their homes and landlords afloat.
