Gardenhire announced in his pregame meeting with the media that Joe Nathan would take over Matt Capps' closing duties, starting immediately.

He said he spoke with both Capps and Nathan following Capps' seventh blown save last night, when he erased a one-run lead with a two run, two out home run in the ninth inning of the Royals' 2-1 win.

"We're going to do a flip-flop to kind of get Capps going again," Gardy said. "We'll let Nathan finish out a few and maybe [Glen] Perkins, who knows, but right now we're just going to have Nathan close. Obviously Capps has been kind of fighting it and we want to get him right -- he's a big part of our bullpen."

Gardenhire said it was more of a mechanical issue than lack of confidence. On the home run last night, Capps tried to go inside with a fastball, but ended up leaving it over the plate.

Gardy said Nathan would be available to pitch tonight if necessary.
