Names of St. Paul shooting victims released

St. Paul police were seeking a suspect Monday in the Sunday morning shooting that seriously injured a pregnant woman, her boyfriend and her now-newborn baby.

As for the baby -- it's a boy, police spokesman Peter Panos said.

The mother, Andrea M. Benjamin, 23, delivered her baby early after she and the 7 1/2-month-old fetus were struck by one of several bullets fired through the door of her apartment in the 1700 block of Case Avenue on the city's East Side.

The boyfriend, Richard M. Brown, 18, also was wounded during the shooting, which occurred about 12:15 a.m. Sunday. Police say the shooting may be connected to a dispute at the apartment late Saturday, but were offering few new details Monday.

In addition to pursuit of the suspect, whom Panos declined to name or to describe, police also have issued a pickup order for at least one possible witness in the case.

Brown remained hospitalized Monday in serious condition at Regions Hospital, where he declined interview requests, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The baby boy, who reportedly was in serious condition Sunday at Regions, since has been moved to a children's hospital, Panos said. He did not know the baby's current condition or the name of the hospital to which he was transferred.

Benjamin still was believed to be at Regions, although a spokeswoman there said no information was available. Panos said that the woman remains in serious condition. A message left on her personal phone was not returned Monday.

Panos had no information about her past. But according to the state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, an Andrea M. Benjamin with the same birthdate as the victim's has a criminal record that has included a stay at the state women's prison in Shakopee.

Family members could not be reached to comment Monday.
