More than 200,000 Graco and Simplicity cribs were recalled by the Consumer Product Safety Commission on Thursday because the drop-sides can fall, trapping and suffocating babies. From the CPSC:

The picture I saw from the CPSC looked all too familiar. And sure enough, we're being told that the classically-styled, seemingly safe Graco Sarah crib we bought at Toys"R"Us for only $120 or so (after coupons and on sale - a fact that I was very thrilled by at the time) is not a safe place to slumber.

Now I've never been part of a recall like this.

Oh - I take that back. We had some Coscto trail mix that was included in that large peanut recall a year or so ago. But we'd eaten that long before we received a postcard notifying us of the problem.

So now what? It's 5:30 p.m. Do I put the kid in the crib tonight, or find an alternative? And do I deliver the crib back to the store, or get a repair kit?

We bought the crib at Toys"R"Us. Their policy is to ask no questions when there's a recall:

But I really don't feel like dismantling and stuffing a crib into the minivan. How do I know I'm picking out a safe crib anyway?

Another option is to order a kit that immobilizes the drop side from the manufacturer LaJobi at www.lajobi.com or by calling 1-888-842-2215.

I'll let you know what we decide.
