Murder charges were filed this week against Anton L. Burnes, 29, in the May 2008 shooting death of Kevin D. Dunn in St. Paul's Frogtown neighborhood.

Police went to the corner of Grotto Street and Thomas Avenue at 1:30 a.m. May 31, 2008, after a caller reported that shots had been fired and a man in a yellow shirt had his arm in the air. Two men -- one in the yellow shirt -- fled east down an alley when they saw the squad car, according to the criminal complaint filed Monday.

Officers chased and caught Lance J. Hartwig after he threw a small heavy object onto a nearby roof. An officer retrieved the object and found that it was a .38-caliber revolver with four spent rounds and one live round.

As he was being handcuffed, Hartwig told police, "I was at Willard's [Bar] and they all started shooting at me so I ran away," the complaint said.

Meanwhile, Dunn had been admitted to Regions Hospital for a single gunshot wound. He died later that day. Three other people also were treated for gunshot wounds at area hospitals. All had been shot while outside Willard's, the complaint said.

Last October, investigators talked to a person identified in the complaint as M.S., who told them that Burnes, of St. Paul, told him he had shot Dunn, then given the gun to Hartwig and told him to get rid of it, the complaint said. A warrant has been issued for Burnes' arrest.

Hartwig, 27, of St. Paul, was charged in October 2008 with being a felon in possession of a firearm. That complaint was amended last June to add a charge of second-degree murder, aiding an offender. His trial is scheduled to begin April 5.
