Mural project at South completed

South High School's summer mural project is done and the school is hosting a community discussion of the design reflecting student interpretations of constitutional principles. The discussion will take place at an open house at the school, 3131 19th Av. S., on Sept. 5 from 6:30-9 p.m. Among those participating will be hip-hop artist Brother Ali and storyteller Rose McGee. Brother Ali is pictured in the mural. As reported in this blog last month, more than a dozen South students volunteered a good chunk of their summer to create the 1,700 square foot mural in a stairwell. They worked under muralists Greta McLain, a South alum, Shannon McEvoy, and Gustavo Lira, as well as South art teacher Denny Sponsler. MPLS stopped by during the last week of painting and we've posted a video here so you can get a glimpse. The theme, "we the people," draws on constitutional principles. That adult at the bottom of the scaffolding is Sponsler, and his face also appears in the figure of the pitcher, at his students' insistence.
