The filing deadlines for City Council candidates on Tuesday brought some familiar names back into the political arena for the November elections.
In Plymouth, former Mayor Judy Johnson, who lost a tight race for state senator in 2006 against DFL Sen. Terri Bonoff, is back on the ballot -- this time seeking the council seat for Ward 1.
The council member who has held that seat, Sandy Hewitt, is not running for reelection. Johnson will face four competitors: Jim Davis, David Miller, Daniel Hendrickson and Karl Neset.
In Eden Prairie, four people have filed for two at-large City Council seats, including Ron Case, a former council member who was the runner-up in the last mayoral race.
Incumbents Brad Aho and Sherry Butcher are seeking reelection. Challenging them are Jeffrey Meyerhofer and Case, who ran for mayor in 2006 and was defeated by the current mayor, Phil Young.
And in Medina, Mayor Tom Crosby is facing a challenge from the former mayor, Bruce Workman, whom Crosby beat when Workman was the incumbent in 2006. Then, Crosby won by a sizable margin -- 64 to 36 percent.
Following are some of the other contests shaping up in the west metro. Incumbents are noted with a star after their name:
