Fire from an explosion at a home in Hermantown spread to multiple buildings Saturday night as emergency crews raced to find and account for everyone who lives in the city’s Jennifer Circle neighborhood.

The explosion happened around 6:20 p.m. City spokesman Joe Wicklund said it was too early to tell what caused the explosion.

First responders haven’t said whether there were any injuries.

More than 10 agencies were on the scene working to contain the flames in the northeastern Minnesota city just west of Duluth. City officials were urging the public to avoid the area on social media Saturday night.

“This is a multifamily neighborhood with different styles of housing and apartments,” Wicklund said. “There are still folks we’re working to account for.”

St. Louis County and the Red Cross are working to provide shelter for residents who were displaced.

City officials have opened Hermantown City Hall as a reunification point for families.
