A Mounds View man who fatally stabbed his brother after the two drank and argued in January was sentenced on Friday to 10 years of probation.

Jay H. Hilling, 57, also was ordered to serve a year in the Ramsey County workhouse -- with credit for 214 days spent in custody.

He pleaded guilty in June to second-degree manslaughter in the death of Michael S. Hilling, 51.

Defense attorney Thomas Donohue argued that Michael Hilling was the aggressor in a Jan. 31 fight that ended with Jay stabbing Michael in the heart.

The charges say that Jay Hilling was given a breath test that night and had a blood-alcohol content of 0.15 percent and that his brother had a blood-alcohol content of 0.32 percent. Police said then that they'd been called to the house dozens of times over the years.
