A 27-year-old motorist struck a tree over the weekend near Hudson, Wis., and died, authorities said Monday.

The St. Croix County Sheriff's Office was alerted to the crash about 5:20 a.m. Saturday in the 600 block of Coulee Trail in Troy Township.

Timothy E. Hoffman, of Hudson, was driving west on Coulee Trail, where his car went into a ditch, crossed the road, struck a mailbox, went over a driveway and hit a tree, the Sheriff's Office said.

Hoffman was taken by air ambulance to Regions Hospital and died the next day, according to the Sheriff's Office.

He was not wearing a seat belt, and "alcohol may be a factor in the crash," a statement from the Sheriff's Office read.
