A 60-year-old Iowa man was killed Friday morning when his motorcycle collided with a horse on a rural two-lane road in Fillmore County, according to authorities.

The man, whose name has not been released, was driving his 2000 Harley-Davidson motorcycle east on Hwy. 44 near Mabel, an area marked by rolling hills. A horse grazing in a south ditch broke free and wandered onto the highway, the State Patrol reported. The driver braked and swerved before colliding with the animal in the eastbound lane.

Authorities responded to the call about 11:30 a.m. The driver, of Decorah, Iowa, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Fillmore County Sheriff's Office. The animal was also killed in the crash.
