Motivation starts with sibling rivalry

Sophomore Max Kelly is the highest-ranked player on the Forest Lake boys' golf team. Older sister Betsy, now at Colorado State, won a girls' state title in 2009.Most memorable moment as a high school athlete? Probably my first hole-in-one. It was at the Tri-State [Invitational] at Edinburgh USA. It was a 193-yard par 3. It took one hop and went in. I was playing really bad, but that brightened my day.

How old were you when you started playing golf? I've been playing ever since I could walk. We live on a course, so I've always been around one.

How important is golf to you? Golf is my main priority in life. Besides school, of course.

Do you have any golf superstitions? I have to mark my ball a certain way. I have a superstition about that.

Strangest experience on the course: I got chased by a goose at the Bunker Hills Invite. I just ran away from it.

Favorite club in your bag?

I'd have to say my 7-iron. I can pretty much do anything with it.

Small tip before a big tournament: Have fun. Don't get down on yourself.

What is running through your mind before you tee off? I'm usually pretty nervous, so I'm just thinking that I want to commit to the shot and put a good swing on it.

Biggest motivation: Mainly my sister. When I play her, it's always so competitive and it's always super close.
